Here's another throwback project for my foundation year. Although I didn't use this shoot for the part of my final product, it's still something I'd like to do again in the future, just black and white on a distinct classic style inspired by Audrey Hepburn in contrast with a glimpse of manhood inspired by Rene Magritte's The Son of Man.

Since I came back to Bangkok, I don't know if it's because of the extreme heat, but I've become very lazy lately. I haven't been updated with my blog or even just to go out and take pictures. Foundation year is over, so I'm going to use this summer break to share my past project rather than a new one (which I have none).

This is a special project collaborating with an English designer, Phoebe English, who also graduated from the MA at Central Saint Martins. She kindly lent us a few statement pieces from her past collections for us to art direct, style, and create an advertisement-like poster as an outcome.

We chose the delicate black top from her MA graduation show (AW 11). We were immediately drawn to the unusual texture and contrast of the materials of rubber and hair. Other groups in our class thought the same thing and decided to use this garment as a part of their project as well. It was very interesting to see the same top but incorporated differently on the models and resulted in such broad outcomes.

Obviously seeing the images below, the concept behind my group's work is bling bling. There's a source for this inspiration though. We wanted to portray our Asian culture (the reflective surface of tiles in temples) but in an abstract way. The hardest thing during the process was probably the silver backdrop we actually had to make from cardboard boxes, wrapped with cooking foil. We also made a video starring our classmate, Isobel Guy as a second outcome. To be honest though, I knew nothing about fashion film. All I was thinking was just to film ranges of shots and combine them together randomly or even make it confusing as seen from some of the Showstudio examples. The film was probably not the best, but I was really proud of it because it was my first time using Adobe Premiere Pro. Living in front of laptop for two days trying to figure out what effects did what, was very stressful, but now that I've used the program, I hope I could challenge myself making more complex fashion film in the future.

The Windows

Here's another throwback project I did for the course in Foundation degree at Central Saint Martins. My pathway was fashion communication, meaning that whatever brief I got from the tutors, I was expected to relate it to fashion context. As of this post, the theme of the project was based on architecture inspired from Constructing World exhibition at the Barbican at the beginning of the year.

Narrowing the focus from architecture in general to just windows, I went to Canary Wharf and Liverpool Street area to take photos of windows (mostly from offices). I didn't expect to be going around London so much just to get inspired for the next step of the project. However, I had a really good time, walking along the Thames River, looking for interesting windows. Despite the windy and cold winter in the UK, this project was a great excuse for me to actually get out of my room and do something more adventurous.

The most interesting thing during the photo trip was that I was told by several security officers that photos were not allowed in the area because of the private property issue. I found it frustrating, as there was no other way for me to do my project. So, depending on the situation, I would discretely take my camera out and hope that nobody noticed me for doing so. I would quickly do my job and walk away. I totally understand the 'privacy' thing; all the photos I took reveal some kind of activities inside the building, which I guessed count as invading the 'privacy', but oh well. It was for the educational purpose. What could I say.

Throwback to the project I did for foundation course at Central Saint Martins. The theme I chose was 'death', which is quite an abstract idea when put in fashion context. I also didn't want to just throw in black clothing on a model or just simply doing a photoshoot at a cemetery.

During research phase, I came across an editorial in the old Numero issue. Perfume bottles were broken against a black reflective surface. Then it sparked me, the 'broken' state of any object could also be considered as 'dead' objects. I went forward with the idea of vanitas, which came from a still-life painting of a 17th-century Dutch genre containing symbols of death or change as a reminder of their inevitability.

The photoshoot process was quite difficult. It involved lots of youtube tutorial and a lot of help from my brother. Each of us helped each other. Alternatively, one was holding a flashlight, and one was taking photographs, while the bottles were placed on a black fabric. The photos turned out better than I thought, but there's still room for improvement, perhaps in the future project.

Smooth as Silk

At the beginning of the year, it was expected that I work on the class project during winter break. My project theme was about color and so there wasn't much plan behind this shoot. Basically, just colors and a taste of Thai culture. It was a good thing my mom owns a lot of bright silk garment that I could borrow her for the model, who's one of my old friends since primary school.

Hopefully, this beautiful backdrop would make Bangkok a must-go destination for anybody.
